Module overview

This module empowers students to become empathetic, ethical, and forward-thinking mental health nurses, equipping them with the critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills needed to navigate complex care environments. With a strong focus on advocacy, minimal restrictive practice, crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and trauma-informed care, students will develop the confidence to support individuals at their most vulnerable moments. Through the exploration of perinatal mental health, active citizenship, and the evolving professional identity of mental health nurses, students will gain a deeper understanding of their role in shaping inclusive and recovery-focused care. Emphasising collaboration, care coordination, and inter-professional teamwork, this module fosters leadership skills essential for driving positive change in mental health services. Clinical supervision and reflective practice will serve as pillars of personal and professional growth, ensuring students graduate with the resilience, insight, and ethical grounding to deliver trauma-sensitive, person-centred care that truly transforms lives.
