This module offers students an in-depth exploration of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), focusing on understanding the mental health needs of young people and their families. Students will begin by critically examining key frameworks used within CAMHS, exploring how these frameworks are applied to improve care outcomes for young people. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the integration of these frameworks into practice and how they guide mental health professionals in providing effective and person-centred care.
A key component of the module is exploring the role of family, carers, and support networks in the mental health treatment of young people. Students will critically analyse how family involvement and support can impact care plans, and how nurses can work collaboratively with families to ensure effective mental health interventions.
The module will also focus on the mental health assessments of children and adolescents, teaching students evidence-based approaches to understanding the unique mental health needs of young people. This will include examining the significance of family dynamics in the assessment process and how mental health professionals can incorporate family needs into treatment planning. Additionally, students will explore a variety of therapeutic interventions and approaches in supporting children, adolescents, and families.
Students will also gain practical skills in facilitating psycho-educational groups, learning how to plan, implement, and evaluate these groups in a way that supports the mental and emotional well-being of children, adolescents, and their families. The focus will be on fostering a safe, inclusive environment and applying evidence-based communication and group management techniques.
In addition, the module will critically address the intersections that often add complexity to clinical presentations, regarding various factors such as sexual health, identity, autism and neurodiversity, and trauma in the context of mental health care. Students will learn to develop inclusive, trauma-informed strategies that are essential for addressing the complex and diverse needs of young people within CAMHS. These strategies will be aimed at providing holistic care that recognises the multifaceted nature of mental health.
