CHEM3050 Chemistry Literature Project

Module Overview

This module requires students to produce a dissertation under the guidance of a supervisor extending the skills developed in the Advanced Practical module. The dissertation may take the form of a literature review or other extended written report, the production of a web page or podcast, or other agreed format.

(1) To allow students to apply previously learned skills in a more open ended context. (2) To develop students abilities to manage their own learning. (3) To develop students abilities to present their work in written format.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Communicate the results of an open ended investigation with clarity, both verbally and in writing, using appropriate scientific terminology.
  • Manage personal study time effectively.
  • Collate and analyse data from a variety of sources.
  • Work independently towards achieving well defined objectives.
  • Identify key elements of the scientific literature that are relevant to a research area.

Syllabus

The course will comprise preparation of a Dissertation: - Completion of an extended piece of written work. - Fortnightly meetings with supervisor(s), either independently or in groups. - Submission of the dissertation report.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

Short lectures will be used to present the key objectives of the course and to provide a general framework for the presentation of an independent research review. Supervisory meetings to devise dissertation subject, set milestones, and review progress.
