Syllabus

This introduces students to later medieval European history focussing on one century that displays striking parallels with the present, especially environmental catastrophe, global pandemic, and popular protest. It explores four main themes: • The Great Northern European Famine and the ‘Black Death’ (and their social and economic consequences) • Warfare in France and the Mediterranean • Popular Revolt, especially the English Revolt of 1381 • Crisis in religion (heresy; challenges to papal power) It therefore provides a rounded overview of social, economic, political and religious history and will explore interconnections between its four themes to show how these different aspects of history are inter-related.
