NPMH3007 Advancing Recovery Focused Mental Health Nursing

Module Overview

In this module you will further develop the skills required to be a mental health nurse working with people with complex mental health care needs. You will have an opportunity to explore the challenges that may present and develop skills to help you navigate these using a recovery orientated approach.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Critically examine the interpersonal, clinical reasoning, diagnostic and decision-making skills required for the assessment, planning and delivery of care for a person with complex mental health care needs.
  • Develop and articulate an in-depth knowledge of the aetiology, treatment and care needs of people with a range of mental health care needs.
  • Critically evaluate the evidence base relating to the biological, psychological and sociological therapeutic interventions that can be used to promote well-being and recovery of people with mental health care needs.
  • Critically consider the legal and ethical issues relating to individuals with mental health care needs.
  • Critically analyse the potential power issues that exist in professional-service user relationships.

For the assessment you will critically explore the knowledge and skills required by a mental health nurse in caring for people with a variety of needs using a case study of your choice. To help you prepare for the exam you will present your case study to your seminar group.
