Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• To acquire knowledge and skills in supporting CYP and their parents/carers with ASD
• To acquire knowledge and skills in supporting CYP and their parents/carers with LD
• To provide effective Low Intensity support / interventions for CYP with Autism and Learning difficulties in relation to anxiety, depression, behaviour that challenges and cognitive difficulties

The module will cover the following topics:

• Knowledge of Autism and Learning Disabilities, including diagnostic criteria, core features, risk factors, presentations at different chronological ages.
• Knowledge of differential diagnoses for autism and learning disabilities, understanding of differences in their presentation and knowledge of common mental health, physical health, neurodevelopemtnal and functional co-morbidities.
• Relevant aspects of legislation and practice context, e.g. Autism Act 2009; Equality Act 2010, multi-agency context, specialist clinical services etc.
• Social models of disability and practice, e.g. lived experience, neurodiversity, atypical development profiles, recognition of strengths as well as difficulties etc.
• Modification to assessment and clinical practice, e.g. reasonable adjustments, adaptation of communication, working with multiple impairments, working with parents etc.
• Low Intensity interventions, e.g. adapted LI CBT for anxiety and low mood, interventions for challenging behaviour, problem solving and executive function, group-based, parent/carer training programme, adapting interventions, advising others in the CYP’s wider system etc.

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching and learning methods will include lectures, workshops, directed reading, and independent study. Clinical skills-based competencies will be taught through demonstrations, experiential learning, and simulated role plays.
