Dr Debbie Stott is a Research Fellow in the Southampton Education School with extensive recent experience in early years mathematics education research and development with in-service teachers and children. 

She is currently working with Dr Charis Voutsina researching “Cultural rules and uses of written numerals in children’s everyday environments” on a Leverhulme funded project

Debbie draws on 8 years of experience working in a large externally funded primary mathematics research and development project in South Africa. She undertook many academic and developmental roles within the project including longitudinal quantitative and qualitative research and data management, supervision of masters and PhD students, running maths clubs, designing, and running several in-service teacher development programmes and guest lecturing for other faculty programmes. She has a broad publication record, including peer-reviewed book chapters and articles as well as international conference speaking experience (including key notes and plenaries).

Funded development projects have included work funded by the Vestas Empowerment Fund in South Africa.

She completed her longitudinal doctoral study in Education in this project at Rhodes University, examining children’s’ numeracy progression and the role of mediation in 2 after school mathematics clubs. In 2014 she won the Rhodes University Community Engagement Student Researcher of the Year for her doctoral work in the community with the maths clubs.

MPhil/PhD research

Doctoral research title: “Learners’ numeracy progression and the role of mediation in the context of two after school mathematics clubs”. Supervised by Professor Mellony Graven, supported and funded by the South African Numeracy Chair Initiative of the FirstRand Foundation (with the RMB), Anglo America Chairman’s fund, Department of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation of South Africa.

Cultural rules and uses of written numerals in children’s everyday environments

“Cultural rules and uses of written numerals in children’s everyday environments”, (2021-2023), funded by The Leverhulme Trust (RPG-2019-330), working with Dr Charis Voutsina. 
 
This research project, funded by The Leverhulme Trust, aims to trace and analyse the development of preschool children’s understanding of the cultural rules that govern the use of written numbers in everyday contexts, alongside the development of their own, written mathematical notations longitudinally, over their transition from Preschool to Reception.
