Dr Aleksander Marek is a researcher working on Ultrasurge project within Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at University of Southampton

I have graduated with a PhD degree from University of Southampton in 2018. My thesis (‘Development of new virtual fields for the non-linear virtual fields method’) dealt with developing a new algorithm for processing full-field measurements to extract material properties for constitutive models.

Current work:

Currently I am working for the Ultrasurge project where I employ ultra-high speed imaging and full-field measurements to inform design of ultrasonically-powered cutting tools, understand the cutting mechanism and study interaction of ultrasound with living matter (cells and biological tissues).

Research interests

My main interest is in using full-field measurements (such as data obtained with digital image correlation) to inform and validate mechanical models. This includes not only extraction of parameters, but also better modelling of boundary conditions and design of better mechanical tests.

PhD research: ‘Development of new virtual fields for the non-linear virtual fields method’, supervised by Prof. Fabrice Pierron and Dr Frances Davis. The project was funded by EPSRC.
