Research project: computational simulation of long term cement mantle failure in total hip replacement

Failure of the cement mantle in cemented total hip replacement is a major concern and area of interest for pre-clinical analysis. In this project, experimental methods and computational methods were combined to simulate the fatigue damage in bone cement, and so develop tools to assist for future prosthesis design.

Acoustic emission (AE) technology was used in experimental tests of cyclic fatigue loading, to develop the algorithms needed for a computational model of fatigue. The project successfully verified these new computational tools for 2D models of total hip replacement stems.
