Research project: EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Energy Storage and its Applications (EP/L016818/1)

Energy storage is a rapidly developing topic that will be essential in the delivery of a global low carbon economy. This is because key technologies in the decarbonisation of the UK energy economy are the introduction of renewable energy, which is intermittent or unpredictable in nature, and increasing electrification of transport to produce zero or low emission vehicles at point of use.

This CDT is a joint Centre between the Universities of Sheffield and Southampton and aims to train a cohort of over 50 PhD students in energy storage technologies including:

  • Electrochemical energy storage e.g. batteries, flow cells, supercapacitors etc.
  • Thermal energy storage e.g. sensible heat or phase change materials etc.
  • Superconducting magnetic energy storage e.g. SMES devices.
  • Mechanical energy storage e.g. pumped hydro electric, flywheels etc.

 In addition to training in these technology fields, students also engage in a 3 year PhD project in a related subject.
