Research project: Investigating effects of estrogen on trabecular bone mineralisation

Currently Active:

Osteoporosis is a major concern particularly for elderly female patients. In this work, the effects of estrogen levels, and the potential efficacy of pharmacological interventions, were investigated using in-vivo and in-vitro experimentation.

Using electron microscopy, in-vitro assays and measuring mechanical loading response within a custom-designed fluid-flow device, the effect of reduced estrogen levels of osteoblast and osteocyte cells, and the mechanical properties of the trabecular bone, were investigated. The results are important for better understanding possible factors involved in osteoporosis, and future potential interventions.
