Research project: Nanostructured diffusion barrier coatings for nuclear industry

Currently Active:
Yes

The nuclear fission occurring inside nuclear reactors is accompanied by the formation of products of reaction which have detrimental effects on materials.

Among these products, helium easily diffuses across the surrounding surfaces inside the nuclear reactor core, thus causing disorder in the microstructure at nano-scale. This disorder is accompanied by material embrittlement, which shortens considerably the lifetime of the components constituting the reactor core. The scientific goal of this project consists of developing novel nano-crystalline materials with high thermal stability based on self-assembled diffusion barrier.
