Research project: Satellite Microwave Calibration

Instruments used for the measurement of  temperature and water vapour  in the atmosphere will fly on the next generation of low earth orbit meteorological satellites. These instruments play a significant role in enhancing forecast accuracy. Southampton research is concerned with the calibration of these instruments.

Calibration of satellite instruments is vital. Meteorological applications require absolute measurement to a fraction of a degree and this cannot be achieved without a sophisticated calibration system. In this project a performance model has been developed to facilitate the design of this system  and has been used to determine the feasibility of requirements imposed by the users.
