Research project: Smart MRE Materials and Structures for Adaptive Vibration Control

Currently Active:
Yes

Adaptive and smart materials and structures for more efficient vessels (Adam4eve) PI: Ajit Shenoi, CI: Yeping Xiong, Steve Boyd

  • Vibration and noise problems in ships arise from different sources and ship structures experiences complex and changing dynamic excitations which causes structure borne/airborne/seaborne noises transmissions.
  • Magnetorheological Elastomer (MRE) is a promising smart material and its elastic and rheological properties can be changed instantly, continuously and reversibly responding to magnetic field.
  • Develop and manufacture innovative smart MREs and characterise dynamic properties.
  • Prototype smart vibration control device with real‐time controllable stiffness and damping for effectively control of vibration transmission and acoustic noises with enhanced system performance.
