Study Civil Engineering at Southampton and you could apply to SUCCESS (Southampton University Corporate Civil Engineering Scholarship Scheme) which has been running since 2003.
Successful first and second year students applying to SUCCESS benefit from sponsorship which includes:
• Annual bursary
• Summer work placements
• Industrial mentor
• Possible long term employment upon graduation
Once awarded the sponsorship is normally effective until graduation.
The Success Scheme has allowed me to apply my University learning to real life projects! It is a great scheme giving industrial experience without taking a solid year in between studies
SUCCESS will improve your overall employability in Civil Engineering through:
Invaluable industrial experience early in your civil engineering career. Through the 8 week summer work placements where you will have the chance to apply knowledge gained on your degree course.
Opportunities for personal development. You will work with senior engineers from sponsoring companies, who will act as mentors during your course of study and your work experience.
Students who successfully secure SUCCESS sponsorship will complete an initial paid summer placement with their sponsoring company, after which they will receive a yearly bursary of £1,650. This format will continue for the remainder of your studies, subject to satisfactory academic and placement reports. Year 1 students who are sponsored, may also be eligible for a top-up bursary from Construction Skills through the INSPIRE scheme. Students should make direct enquiries regarding this during their interviews with potential employers.
I would encourage all Civil Engineering students to think about a SUCCESS scholarship.
Successful SUCCESS candidates are expected to work for their sponsoring employer during summer vacations. The period of work is by mutual agreement with the employer but with 8 to 10 weeks being the recommended duration. Upon each academic term, students are required to write an academic progress report for their sponsors and are expected to achieve a minimum of 60% overall average in their degree each year (showing the ultimate potential to achieve an upper Second Class degree minimum).
A substantial number of sponsored students receive offers of permanent employment upon graduation; it is entirely optional whether or not to accept. Many students choose to accept an employment offer with their Sponsor after the development of a rewarding 3 to 4 year working relationship. Similarly, if students terminate their studies early, they will be expected to refund a proportion of any sponsorship received pro-rata.
Students in any year of study, except the final year, are invited to submit applications at the beginning of the academic year in October/November. These applications are screened and circulated to participating Sponsors for consideration and selection. The short listed candidates attend a specially arranged 'Interview Day' held on the university campus where, company representatives showcase their work and are available for informal discussion. Formal interviews are held in the afternoon with the outcomes confirmed shortly after the interview day. Extensive support and help is provided by the University of Southampton Careers Service towards completion of the application form and performing to the best of your ability at the interview and selection day.
