Helen Kent is a postgraduate research student within English at the University of Southampton.

After more than fifteen years with the BBC, as a journalist and television producer, I moved into educational support in both primary and secondary schools, and then joined the University of Winchester as an Associate Lecturer. Here I studied for a PGCLTHE (Distinction, 2013) and an MA in Creative & Critical Writing (Distinction, 2017). My MA dissertation focused on two artists, Mary Stella Edwards and Judith Ackland.

In 2018 I was awarded a Presidential Scholarship to continue this research for a PhD in Creative Writing. Expert supervision from Carole BurnsDr Will May and Professor Philip Hoare, has strengthened and sustained this work.

Research interests

I am researching hybrid forms of narrative non-fiction and plan to combine memoir, journalism, biography and poetry in my creative thesis, The Cabin. This (auto) biography explores the legacy of two artists: Mary Stella Edwards (1898-1989) and Judith Ackland (1892-1971); the significance of their summer studio, The Cabin; and the memories of those who have lived or holidayed in the North Devon village of Bucks Mills.

If you would like to help with this research please get in touch. I am keen to hear from people who have memories of Mary or Judith; who are knowledgeable about, or who own, their watercolours and models; who have studied Mary’s published poetry; or who have been given a National Trust Artist’s Residency in The Cabin.

You do not have to have a major connection – snippets and fleeting impressions are also interesting - and contacting me will not commit you to anything.
