Rebecca Thomas is a Postgraduate Research Student with the faculty of Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Southampton.

Rebecca completed her undergraduate education at Bristol University, graduating in Animal Behaviour and Welfare in 2018. Whilst at Bristol, she developed an interest in the human challenges of providing animal welfare within production systems, particularly in the laboratory environment. Following a 2 week work placement within a research laboratory, she formulated a dissertation project which focused on the cultural impediments to effective communication transfer. This project was then developed into her PhD project which she is currently undertaking at Southampton University.

Research interests

Rebecca’s main research interests centre on the complex human and non-human interactions which exist within our society and the ways in which these difficult relationships are navigated day to day.

Rebecca’s research, funded by the University of Southampton, is titled ‘A holistic approach to human and animal welfare within the laboratory walls’.The project takes an interdisciplinary approach and seeks to understand the wellbeing of animal caretakers alongside the welfare of the laboratory animals whom they care for. Thus encouraging marginalised voices of animal production to be captured and validated within the laboratory setting. The projects ultimate aim is to create a new concept of welfare which is acceptable to use across both human and animal bodies.
