Andrew (‘Andy’) Richardson is a Lecturer in Adult Nursing within Health Sciences, University of Southampton. Andy trained and qualified as a nurse in the Royal Navy (RN) in 1985. A 20 year nursing career in the RN, it included working in various primary and secondary care settings: at sea, medical centres and military hospitals. Andy’s clinical expertise is in cardiac nursing and currently his role includes module/cohort leader for a number of modules, including Developments in Cardiology, Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease and Heart Failure, and History Taking and Physical Assessment (HTPA). He is also involved in pre-registration nurse education, especially Basic and Advanced Life support training. Andy completed the ENB 124 (Coronary Care Nursing) course in 1996. Following completion of a teaching qualification, he completed a BA (Hons) in Health Promotion in 2001 and took up his current post at Southampton. In 2009 he completed an MSc in Education, followed by a Diploma in Philosophy at the University of London.

Andrew’s current academic interests include emerging risk factors in cardiovascular disease and the contemporary science of behavioural cardiology. Andy is also a council member of the British Association for Nursing in Cardiac Care (BANCC), which promotes innovation and excellence in cardiovascular nursing.
