Clinical Skills

Our clinical skills laboratories replicate the clinical environment of a ward seen in today’s hospitals. This virtual ward environment provides the ideal workspace for students to practice and acquire their clinical skills.

The School is fortunate to have a variety of clinical skills laboratories which can be used by all students. These include general purpose laboratories, adapted  laboratories for particular use and a range of technical equipment and models. For example podiatrists use the Canonbury suite; physiotherapists have bench  therapy rooms and occupational therapists have  adaptive equipment for assisted living. Nurses and midwives focus on two skills laboratories resembling 5 bedded  hospital wards separated by a central control room.

Each ward is viewable from the central control room via 6 audio-equipped ceiling mounted cameras, each controllable with a 360 degree viewing angle. Each ward is equipped with computerised and interactive SimMan® mannequins, which are used to simulate interactions with real patients. In addition we have recently equipped a 'soft room' with video cameras for communication skills rehearsals. While each profession has its own unique skill needs, increasingly there are skills that are common to all - like resuscitation and infection control.
