Research project: CanDo - Developing nursing excellence for inpatients with cancer

Currently Active:
Yes

The CanDo campaign, supported by the National Cancer Action Team and the Centre for Innovation and Leadership in Health Care will begin by working with high performing Trusts to identify cases studies which might be used to improve the quality of patient care for in-patients with cancer.

While much previous work in developing the quality of cancer services has focussed on specialist areas, this campaign will deliberately seek to engage and support nurses not specialised in cancer care. The results of the 2010 patient experience survey were used to identify Trusts where responses to the survey suggest that the quality of nursing care experienced by patients with cancer in the inpatient setting may be excellent. Interviews are being held with a selection of the top ten performing Trusts to gather data that will inform the outcomes of the campaign. In spring of 2012 a quality improvement tool kit, based around case studies developed with participating trusts will be launched. We hope to make this useful to nursing leaders and managers in developing the quality of nursing care delivered to cancer in-patients, whether or not they are cared for in specialist wards. The future beyond that is yet to be mapped out, but if the campaign lives up to its name we hope that nurses in all trusts will embrace the tool kit with a ‘CanDo’ attitude to see what they can indeed do to improve the experience of their patients.
