CAUTI is one of the commonest causes of hospital acquired infection but much less is known about the associated risks for community patients with a urinary catheter.

Overview

This is a scoping exercise to identify sources and quality of existing data on CAUTI in the community.

Methodology

Literature search, identification of sources of information, local audit of datasets.

Main outcomes

A synthesis of the available evidence on the incidence and the clinical and economic impact of urinary catheter-associated infection (CAUTI) in the community; availability of appropriate reporting mechanisms; quality of data; limitations; and possible recommendations.
