Entry qualification equivalencies for Canadian students

Find out the Canadian equivalents to the grades and academic qualifications required to study with us in the UK. These will depend on what level of study you're applying for.
 

You will also need to have a student visa in place.

If you want to take an undergraduate course with us but do not yet have the qualifications needed to apply, we may offer a foundation course that will enable you to qualify and secure a place. 

The Canadian equivalents for their entry requirements will depend on which of these one-year intensive introductions you apply for.  

They include: 

Most of our undergraduate degrees take 3 years to complete full time and award a bachelor’s degree in the field you study.

To study with us at the undergraduate level, you need one of the following, with the grade or score dependent on which course you're applying for:

  • a diploma awarded by a province or territory, typically with a minimum of 81% overall in 5 or 6 subjects at grade 12
  • an International Baccalaureate (IB) score of between 30 and 36 points

Canadian equivalents to A levels

Overall equivalency grades are averaged across 5 academic subjects, or 6 for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and in New Brunswick: 

  • A*AA: 87%
  • AAA: 85%  
  • AAB: 83%  
  • ABB: 81%
  • BBB: 79%

For the OSSD, the following subjects are not accepted as meeting the total number of subject requirements:

  • Acting
  • Foods
  • PE
  • Yoga and Wellness
  • Teaching Assistant
  • PE Superfit
  • Model United Union

Our postgraduate taught degrees involve more advanced study and usually take 1 year, depending on the course. Degrees awarded include master’s degrees, postgraduate diplomas and certificates.

To apply, you need one of the following:  

  • a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada
  • a professional degree such as one in Law or Engineering, accredited by the relevant Canadian authority

Depending on which course you apply for, your minimum grade requirement will be a: 

  • first class UK degree equivalent
  • UK 2:1 degree equivalent
  • UK 2:2 degree equivalent

Canadian postgraduate degree equivalents

First class UK degree equivalents

You must have achieved one of the following:

  • an A
  • at least 80%
  • a minimum grade point average (GPA) of:
    • 3.5 out of 4.0
    • 3.7 out of 4.3
    • 3.67 out of 4.33, or
    • 3.75 out of 4.5
  • a grade of:
    • 7 out of 9
    • 8 out of 10, or
    • 10 out of 12

UK 2:1 degree equivalents

You must have achieved one of the following:

  • a B
  • at least 73%
  • a minimum GPA of:
    • 3.0 out of 4.0
    • 3.0 out of 4.3
    • 3.00 out of 4.33, or
    • 3.0 out of 4.5
  • a grade of:
    • 5 out of 9
    • 6 out of 10, or
    • 8 out of 12

UK 2:2 degree equivalents 

You must have achieved one of the following:

  • a C
  • at least 63%
  • a minimum GPA of:
    • 2.1 out of 4.0
    • 2.0 out of 4.3
    • 2.00 out of 4.33
    • 2.2 out of 4.5
  • a grade of:
    • 2 out of 9
    • 4 out of 10, or
    • 5 out of 12

To study for a PhD or research degree with us, you need all of the following:

  • a 2:1 undergraduate honours degree
  • a master's degree with merit
  • a strong research proposal

Qualifying degrees must have been awarded by a recognised university.
