Dr Oche Onazi is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Southampton.

I joined Southampton Law School in October 2016 as a Lecturer in Law. I have degrees from the University of Edinburgh (Ph.D), the University of Warwick (LL.M in Law in Development) and the University of Jos-Nigeria (LL.B). I am also a qualified (but non-practising) Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Before joining Southampton Law School, I was a Lecturer in Law at the University of Dundee between 2011-2016, where I taught across a range of subjects, including human rights, legal theory and public law.

Research interests

My research interests cover three related themes. Firstly, I am generally interested in the critical and theoretical study of law from the perspectives of other disciplines, such as sociology, politics, history and philosophy. Secondly, influenced by this approach, I am interested in the role of law in development, the interface between human rights and development, and moral-philosophical approaches to poverty and development. Thirdly, I am interested in the interface between law, human rights and development, and also between human rights and global social justice. I have several publications that mirror these interests, including a monograph (Human Rights from Community published by the Edinburgh University Press in 2013) and an edited collection (African Legal Theory and Contemporary Problems published by Springer in 2014).

I am currently a recipient of an Early Career Fellowship from the Independent Social Research Foundation (ISRF) to work on a monograph that aims to develop an African legal philosophy of disability justice.
