Zoe Sheppard is a Teaching Fellow in Education as well as a Senior Tutor within the Faculty of Medicine.

Zoe Sheppard is a Masters (MSc) qualified Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) and Qualified Teacher, with a long-held passion for education in the training and development of healthcare professionals.

Qualifying from Kings College London University (KCL) in 1994, Zoe quickly specialised within HIV medicine.  Alongside, working as an ANP, she has been involved with national collaborative initiatives with the Department of Health, non-Governmental organisations and the pharmaceutical industry to increase HIV testing and improve the clinical education and competence of nurses’ practise.

Zoe’s key areas of interest are in the delivery of high-quality clinical education, promotion of research initiatives as well as medication adherence and treatment support.  In 2011, she won a Florence Nightingale scholarship to support her in the implementation of research in practice.

In 2014, Zoe left London and returned to Southampton.  At that time, she made the decision to utilise the educational experiences and skills she had acquired as a nurse, to undertake her PGCE and QTS, whilst continuing to practice as an ANP in Primary Care.   Completing her studies Zoe consolidated her pedagogical underpinnings working in mainstream education, prior to combining her two professions at University Hospital Southampton in the provision of clinical skills teaching, where she forged strong relationships with the Faculty of Medicine in the delivery and review of clinical skills to meet curriculum requirements.

Alongside, her professional roles, Zoe was the Honorary Secretary of the National HIV Nurses Association, responsible for coordinating their 4 national study days each year.  She travelled to China speaking to the Minister for Health and British Ambassador on the central role of the nurse in the provision of high-quality evidence-based HIV care; as well as visiting hospitals in the country to work alongside and provide educational support to the nurses working in HIV care.

Zoe volunteers for the charity JustTRI which provides free annual educational workshops to nurses (paediatric and adult) working in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.  She is a mentor to nursing degree undergraduates at KCL and continues to practice as an ANP in the NHS.
