Dr Clare Polack is Programme Lead for the BM(EU) within Medicine at the University of Southampton.
Clare was a graduate of Edinburgh University before studying medicine in Newcastle. After becoming a GP she worked in Tanzania for 18 months training local health workers on The Island of Pemba. She then spent a year working in New Zealand before returning to Edinburgh to take up a Higher Professional Training Fellowship in general practice. The fellowship allowed her to develop her skills and experience in teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates as well as consolidate her clinical role and achieve a Masters degree.
Before moving South Clare worked as a clinical lecturer at Edinburgh University while working part time in a deprived practice in the city.
Clare moved to Southampton University in 2004. She worked for the first 7 years within the Primary Medical Care (PMC) teaching team. Within this role she facilitated a lot of staff development events for doctors, practice nurses and practice managers. She was responsible for students on PMC placements and developed a new PMC course for 4th year students (old curriculum).
In September 2011 she took on the role of BM(EU) programme leader. This was a new initiative to develop an undergraduate medical degree in collaboration with a German health care provider in Kassel, Germany. European students who are bilingual in German and English complete the first two years in Southampton and the remaining three (mainly clinical years) in Kassel. The first cohort of BM(EU) students graduated in 2018 and have guaranteed foundation year 1 jobs in Kassel.
Clare is chair of Student Progress Committee and leads for the faculty on Fitness to Practice, special considerations and appeals.
Clare also continues to work as a General Practitioner in Southampton.
