Nick Curzen BM(Hons) PhD FRCP is Professor of Interventional Cardiology at the University of Southampton and Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust.
Nick undertakes both coronary intervention and TAVI. He has an active research team: he is Chief Investigator for 2 large randomised trials in the UK: RIPCORD 2 and FORECAST. In the past he was Chief Investigator for RIPCORD 1, FFRCT RIPCORD and COMET. Nick has led a platelet function research team for over 10 years looking at personalised antiplatelet medication and has published widely in this field using TEG 5000. More recently, the team has just finished a validation study for TEG 6S and has been involved in the discussions about PROPHECI. He has an active longstanding collaboration with Prof. Neil Bressloff, Professor of Biomedical Design and Engineering at the University of Southampton. Together they have co-supervised 3 PhD students looking at computer models of coronary stent and TAVI deployment and work together as CARENA Healthcare to design novel solutions in TAVI and coronary intervention. Nick has published over 200 PubMed papers & edited 3 textbooks, including the Oxford textbook of Interventional Cardiology. His Coronary Research Group have attracted over £4m of research funding in the last 15 months. He is currently supervising 2 MD and 2 PhD students and regularly supervises BMedSci and MMedSci medical students. His bid for an NIHR Clinical Academic Fellowship has just been successful.
Human Development and Physiology
In treating coronary artery disease with percutaneous coronary intervention, stent malapposition is to be avoided. The focus here is to design stents that minimise malapposition in challenging disease.
To construct a computer model of a state of the art TAVI device to simulate deployment in a diseased native valve in order to assess the factors associated with paravalvular leakage (PL) and the stresses in the implant leaflets, with a view to formulating beneficial modification.
