Mr Federico Zavanelli is a SWW DTP Postgraduate Researcher within Music at the University of Southampton.

I hold a BA in Musicology from the University of Pavia and an MA in Music from the University of Southampton.

My undergraduate research focused on Paolo da Firenze’s ballatas and their tonal organisation and my MA on the reception of Franco of Cologne in Trecento music theory.

I am currently interested in late thirteenth-century Italian music and theory and the transition towards the Ars nova. Specifically, in my doctoral thesis I will look at French influence on music in Italy and the interpretation of semibreve’s theory in Italian treatises and its practical actualisation.

I delivered papers on my research at international conferences including the 47th Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference (MedRen), the 5th Biennial Conference of the International Musicological Society for East Asia (IMSEA), and “Composer(s) in the Middle Ages” (University of Rouen).

In 2015 I worked as an intern at the Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music (DIAMM) based at the University of Oxford. During my Undergraduate at the University of Pavia I led tutorials for the courses of Renaissance Modality, Renaissance Counterpoint, and Medieval Notations.

Research interests

Late thirteenth- and early fourteenth-century music and theory; mensural music; notation; manuscript history.
