Jamie Howell is a performer, composer, and teacher currently working towards a PhD in composition at the University of Southampton.

After completing a BA in Jazz Studies at the City of Leeds College of Music in 1996, I moved to Budapest to teach EFL. After five years, I returned to the UK and began a career as a guitar teacher and performer which I continue to this day. I completed an MMus in Composition at the University of Southampton in 2018 and continued straight on to a PhD.

I perform and compose for my band The Definite Collective as well as in a duo with a double bass player. The duo released an EP in 2019 which can be heard on my profile on bandcamp.com

Research interests

My research touches on the topics of groove, repetition, digital aesthetics, improvisation, and open score composition. I am currently working on the ways in which performing musicians can be influenced by the aesthetics of the digital realm.

PhD research project

PhD supervision: Matthew Shlomowitz and Ben Oliver

I receive funding from the University of Southampton Vice Chancellor Scholarship

I will be teaching on MUSI1017 Composition fundamentals in the second semester of the 19/20 academic year.

I taught ‘British Rock’ on the UOS summer course in August 2019.

I teach guitar at Leighton Park School and Wellington college.
