Ms Sarah Lu is a postgraduate research student within Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton at the University of Southampton.

I am a postgraduate research student based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, and partnered with Rolls-Royce Plc. My PhD research focuses on developing novel microfluidic in situ sensors for the detection of pure beta-emitting radionuclides. To enable a robust assessment of the radionuclide distribution and dispersion in the environment for routine and post-accident events as well as industrial facility monitoring and process control.

I graduated for the University of Southampton in 2017, with a first-class BSc in Chemistry. My final year project and dissertation focussed on the Design and Manufacture of a Microfluidic Device for MRI Characterisation of Diffusion and Slow flow for the progression of water diffusion MRI (Recipient of R E Parker Project Prize for best Undergraduate project)

While completing my degree, I completed an Excel Placement (2016) focussing on the Innovative cytokine extraction, purification & analysis for non-invasive inflammation monitoring.

I also have a passion for Science Communication and Radiochemistry Outreach, in particular communicating challenging topics.

Listen, validate, address: Communicating research to polarised audiences

Communicating your research and its importance can be daunting, but knowing your audience is potentially already divided, can be even more nerve-wracking. How do you engage effectively with the media, the public, and policymakers when discourse on your research is already polarised?

Repairing Radiochemistry’s Reputation; Isotope by Isotope

“Repairing radiochemistry’s reputation, isotope by isotope” will tackle the public perception issue surrounding radiochemistry. The project pilots an Isotope card game to be disseminated to schools targeting KS4 students. The project expands on and applies key concepts of radiochemistry & radioactivity in the curriculum, whilst highlighting the role of radiochemistry in everyday life, potential career paths, and improving trust in the radiochemical and nuclear industry. The impact of the card game methodology is evaluated by teacher observations and pupil feedback.

This pilot assesses if this method of gamification is effective as a curriculum-enriching activity for radiochemistry and potential scope for teachers to engage their students with radiochemistry outreach.
