Research project: Trans-Haiti: Crustal-scale geodynamics of the Hispaniola boundary in the Caribbean

Active tectonic deformation along compressional and transpressional fault systems that develop in subduction zones pose a major hazard to life and infrastructure. In this project we will image the subsurface structure and seismic activity on two major strike slip faults in Haiti.

The Trans-Haiti project aims to Image crustal and upper-most mantle structure across the North American/Caribbean plate boundary and the trans-Haitian deformation belt. We will also constrain location and depth distribution of active seismicity in the fault zone (northern and southern strike-slip faults). This will enable us to begin to quantify the subsurface segmentation of the hazardous faults and inform on the position and kinematics of fault systems that have no clear surface expression.

Data

During April 2013 - June 2014, the Trans-Haiti project funded by the ANR France, the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and Natural Environment Research Council UK conducted a joint onshore and offshore wide angle seismic reflection / refraction profile across Haiti and the Caribbean Sea, as well as deployment of a seismic network in Haiti to monitor earthquake activity.
