Athina Vlachantoni is a Professor of Gerontology and Social Policy, and Admissions Tutor for Postgraduate Taught programmes in the Department of Gerontology. She has been a member of the Centre for Research on Ageing since 2008, and a member of the ESRC Centre for Population Change since 2014. She is the Director of the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership, a partnership between the Universities of Southampton, Portsmouth, Chichester and Brighton. She is currently Treasurer of the UK Social Policy Association, and a member of the British Society of Gerontology, and the British Society of Population Studies. She was Associate/Deputy Editor of Ageing & Society between 2015-25, and is currently a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Social Policy. Professor Vlachantoni was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2022. Professor Vlachantoni served as a member and Deputy Chair of the ESRC Grants Assessment Panel C (2019-21), as Chair of the ESRC GAP D (2021-3) and as Chair of the ESRC GAP A (2023-5). She is currently Chair of the Wellcome Trust Advisory Board for Social Sciences.
