About

Dr James A Grant-Jacob MInstP, is a Senior Research Fellow at the Optoelectronics Research Centre. James's physics Master's dissertation was on "Strings and branes in exotic space-times". He obtained a PhD degree from the University of Southampton in 2011, with a thesis titled "Table-Top XUV Nanoscope". He has worked in a variety of areas, ranging from high harmonic generation and phase retrieval, to DNA sequencing, laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT), pulsed laser deposition, laser fabrication, laser machining, sensing, medical imaging and artificial intelligence.

He has over 170 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, with a proven track record in high quality publications, which includes work with NASA on manufacturing lasers for greenhouse gas detection.

Using grants from NVIDIA, he and his colleagues have used deep learning for improving a variety of laser-based processes.

In 2019, he was chosen to present his research on ‘Particle pollution detection using artificial intelligence’ at STEM for BRITAIN 2019, which is a national event held at the Houses of Parliament for early career researchers from the fields science, engineering, medicine, technology and mathematics.

He has collaborated with companies such as Dyson, SPI and Fianium, and institutions such as Southampton General Hospital.
