About
Dr Alaa Zalata is Professor of Accounting. Alaa has postgraduate certificate in teaching and higher education and has acquired a recognition by the UK Higher Education Academy (HEA) and became a Fellow of the HEA (Higher Education Academy).
Alaa has a growing and consistent national and international reputation in accounting as supported by his increasing involvement in publication and peer review of prestigious international journals and presentations at national and international conferences. His research contribution cut across many areas including research publications, grant application success rate and PhD supervision.
Alaa has published widely in leading peer-reviewed international journals (ABS 4* and 3*) such as The Leadership Quarterly, British Journal of Management, Journal of Accounting, Auditing & Finance, The International Journal of Accounting, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Research, Journal of International Accounting Auditing and Taxation, Accounting Forum, among others.
In the larger academic community, Alaa has served as Ad-hoc Reviewer for leading journals in accounting such as Accounting and Business Research, the international Journal of Accounting, Critical Perspectives on Accounting, Journal of International Accounting, Auditing and Taxation, The European Journal of Finance, Human Relations, Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies, Journal of Applied Accounting Research and International Journal of Accounting and Information Management.

Current research
Alaa is interested in financial accounting in general and in earnings quality in particular. His recent research papers examine how managers' incentives and the firm's infrastructure shape the quality of earnings, and how the relationship between managers, firms and earnings quality is impacted by the actions of capital market participants. Alaa current research focuses on the role of accounting in promoting gender equality within corporate boardrooms.

Teaching
Alaa has extensive international experience in teaching accounting in higher education institutions both in the UK and abroad not only at the undergraduate but also at the postgraduate level. These include Fundamentals of Financial Accounting, Financial Accounting 1, Financial Accounting 2, Cost and Management Accounting, and Engineering Management and Law (the Accounting component).

Biography
Alaa joined Southampton Business School in September 2015 and having previously held lectureship position at UEL for two years. Alaa received his PhD in Accounting from the University of Aberdeen and previously attained MRes in Accounting and Finance from the same institution.
