Dr Sophie Fletcher

Sophie Fletcher has been the clinical lead for the Respiratory Department at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) 2018-2020 and throughout the COVID 19 global pandemic.

During the pandemic she led a clinical team faced with a novel Respiratory virus that continues to circulate. She is the principal Investigator for the RECOVERY trial at UHS which highlighted the beneficial role of dexamethasone and provided evidence for the limited or ineffectual role of other therapies within an unprecedented time frame.

Dr Fletcher was appointed as the final year module lead for medicine in Wessex in October 2021 and was awarded the Brian Latherdale award for teaching in the same year, as nominated by the students.

Since 2013 -2018 Dr Fletcher has led the ILD (Interstitial Lung Disease) service, a regional specialist service recognised by NHS England, a service that receives both national and international referrals.

She has represented UHS as a speaker for national bodies including

• Royal Society of Medicine
• British Thoracic Society
• British Lung Foundation

Dr Fletcher was worked with the British Lung Foundation, the biomedical research unit, the University of Southampton and Portsmouth hospital to set up a patient support group for those in Wessex with  ILD – WILD,

Dr Fletcher chairs the Southampton ILD Multidisciplinary Team meetings and has established international ILD clinical fellowships, published in internationally recognised journals and participated in multinational clinical trials.
