Current research
Jacob’s primary research interest is law and democratic theory, with a particular interest in law of electoral process, campaign finance, and corruption. Jacob also has an interest in how technology is re-shaping the social context of voting and other types of political expression.
He has additional interest in jurisprudence (especially its relationship to both intellectual history, particularly Plato, Aristotle, and Hobbes, and contemporary philosophy, particularly Dworkin) and tort (particularly product liability and duty of care).
Jacob’s approach to these topics is interdisciplinary, integrating close analysis of statute, doctrine, and legal structures with methods drawn from political philosophy and social science. His research has been published in leading journals in the US (Emory Law Review, First Amendment Law Review, UC Davis Law Review) as well as the UK (Modern Law Review, Public Law, Journal of Law and Society). Jacob has a monograph, The Law of Freedom: Elections and the Supreme Court, forthcoming with Cambridge University Press, on the normative challenges of judicial review of electoral process and American election law doctrine.
