About

Luca is an interdisciplinary scholar working at the intersection of philosophy, psychoanalysis, and medicine.

He joined the School of Primary Care, Population Sciences and Medical Education within the Faculty of Medicine in 2022, bringing with him a rich and wide-ranging experience background in teaching, academic leadership, and interdisciplinary research.

Educated in both Italy (University of Bologna) and the UK (Universities of Birmingham and Kent), Luca has held academic positions over the past thirteen years at the Universities of Kent, Winchester, and Southampton. He has worked in a variety of roles –  lecturer, academic and pastoral tutor, qualitative researcher, research project supervisor – and has taught extensively at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Within the Faculty of Medicine, Luca leads the teaching of Medical Humanities for undergraduate students and plays a key role in promoting interdisciplinary curriculum development and reflective practice.

He also serves as Deputy Director of the Southampton Centre for Medical and Health Humanities, where he fosters interfaculty collaborations and organises both academic and public engagement activities.

His work as Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Lead for the Faculty is driven by a belief that technology should enhance—not replace—meaningful human connection at the heart of medical education.

As Senior Tutor providing pastoral support for Years 1 and 2 of the BM5/6/(EU) programmes, his role is grounded in a commitment to compassionate, student-centred support, helping future doctors navigate the personal and academic challenges of medical training.

Before entering academia, Luca worked as a cultural event organiser in Italy, an experience that continues to inform his passion for public engagement and collaborative scholarship. He enjoys curating interdisciplinary events that bring together academics, researchers, students, and the wider public to explore the role of the humanities in medicine and healthcare.

You can update this in Pure (opens in a new tab). Select ‘Edit profile’. Under the heading and then ‘Curriculum and research description’, select ‘Add profile information’. In the dropdown menu, select - ‘About’.
