Dr Kate Willoughby 

Clinical Tutor and Child Clinical Psychologist, Chartered by the British Psychological Society and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Practitioner Psychologist.

Dr Kate Willoughby is Clinical Tutor and Child Clinical Psychologist within Psychology at the University of Southampton.

Kate graduated from Middlesex University in 2000 with a BSc Honours in Psychology and a Diploma in Occupational Studies. She then worked for six years as a Researcher at St George’s University of London and in Specialist Child and Adolescent Eating Disorder Inpatient Services. At the same time she studied for a PhD exploring the Recovery Process in Childhood Onset Anorexia Nervosa.

Kate then completed her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Southampton and qualified in April 2010. Her first qualified post as a Locum Clinical Psychologist was in a Tier 4 Multi Agency Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). Following this she had a split role across Primary Care Psychology and Tier 3 CAMHS for 18 months.

Kate started as a Clinical Tutor for the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology at the University of Southampton in October 2011. She also holds a Clinical post in a local NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

Research interests

Kate’s main research interests are in Childhood Trauma and Resilience; Childhood Onset Eating Disorders and particularly Recovery from Anorexia Nervosa; Long-term Outcomes and Protective factors for Children in Care; and Child Development, Attachment and Parenting.

She is also interested in various aspects of Child and Adolescent Mental Health more generally and also various aspects related to Clinical Training and the Clinical Psychology profession.

Kate’s specific responsibilities include:

  • Visiting and supporting D.Clin.Psych Trainee’s on placements, reviewing and monitoring their progress in relation to their training needs/priorities, and conducting annual appraisals
  • Supporting and guiding MSc Foundations of Clinical Psychology students
  • Teaching within her area of expertise and general support to the teaching programme
  • Marking academic work and offering support and feedback regarding Trainee’s academic work
  • Developing and contributing to research
  • Supervising and supporting D.Clin.Psych Trainees and MSc Students research dissertations
  • Contributing to providing supervisors workshops and other aspects of work linked to NHS colleagues
  • Contributing to the overall functioning of the Doctoral and MSc programmes

Kate’s teaches on both the Clinical Psychology Doctorate and the MSc Foundation of Clinical Psychology on a range of topics including the History of Clinical Psychology, Professional Regulation, Ethics and Code of Conduct, Core Competencies, and more specific aspects such as Assessment and Formulation, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and Child and Adolescent Mental Health.
