Project overview

The Law Commission proposed the Electronic Trade Documents Bill (“the Bill”) for the legal recognition of trade documents in electronic form. The Bill has been introduced in the House of Lords as a Parliamentary bill. The key document under the Bill is the bill of lading in trade, transport and finance. However, the Bill does not appear to be well suited for the reform of the status of trade documents including the bill of lading. More importantly, the electronic bill of lading is developing fast and new challenges are ahead which are not going to be solved by the Bill.
The project revolves around electronic bill of lading and its primary purpose is to devise a new and feasible legal framework for electronic bills of lading.
