Project overview
The ESRC-funded 'Democracy Matters' project involved teams from the Universities of Sheffield, Southampton, Westminster and UCL who led organisation of two citizens' assemblies in Sheffield and Southampton on proposed devolution deals for the region. These pilot citizens' assemblies were the first of their kind conducted in the UK and sought to explore how civic engagement can be delivered, where power should lie across and within the nations of the UK and provided evidence on how citizens assemblies might in future play a part in governance of the UK.
