After finishing an undergraduate degree in Economics with a specialisation in Social Security at the Lisbon School of Economics and Management at the University of Lisbon, I have started working as an economist and social policy analyst in the Portuguese Social Security Ministry dealing with policy design and evaluation. This position gave me extensive opportunities to collaborate in projects with the OECD (namely, the Social Policy Division) and the EU (e.g. the High Level Expert Group for Demographic Change). Although the contents of my activities within the Portuguese Strategy and Planning Office have been very broad in the field of social policy, the main topics of work and research areas of interest have been family policies, demographic change, policy simulation, effectiveness of social benefits in reducing inequality, fighting poverty and providing adequate social protection. Therefore, I undertook the MSc in Lisbon School of Economics and Management at the University of Lisbon for discussing the effects of parametrization of safety net programs on the efficacy and efficacy of poverty reduction, through the use of microsimulation techniques. In 2013 I had the opportunity to take a major step towards a further development of these areas of interest and field of research by starting a part-time PhD research in the ageing/gerontology in the Centre for Research on Ageing at the University of Southampton. This research is supported by the EPSRC Care Life Cycle project and it studies the effects of pension policies on income distribution, inequality and poverty, as well, the interrelated dimensions of financial sustainability, adequacy and effectiveness, through the use of dynamic microsimulation models.
