RYA powerboat

The RYA National Powerboat Scheme is aimed at craft ofup to about 33ft/10m and without a galley or toilet onboard. The qualifications gained from within this scheme are recognised around the world and some are relevant to those driving commercially.

Sport and Wellbeing are proud to offer all of the Powerboating courses including Level 1/2, Intermediate Day Cruising, Advanced Day and Night and Safety Boat. All courses are booked through the Jubilee Sports Centre Reception. We also offer opportunities to have one to one training sessions with one of our seasoned instructors when you wish to build on your skills.

The National Powerboat course is seen as the international bench mark for Powerboating across the world.

After successfully completing two days of slow and fast manoeuvres you will gain a Level 2 Certificate which will allow the holder to apply for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).  No prior knowledge of boat-handling is expected for candidates participating in this course.

Following completion of the course the attendee should be a self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of won limitations and those of the craft.

This course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes and for racing or training activities.

Pre-requisites:  You must hold the RYA Level 2 National Powerboat Certificate to participate in this course and also have a basic understanding of sailing and windsurfers.

Course content includes:

Preparation, boat handling, dinghy rescue, windsurfer rescue, kayak and canoe rescue, towing, end-of-day procedures, safety, suitability of craft, local factors, communication, rescuing other water users.

Following completion of the course the attendee should be able to provide safety or support cover to a range of craft, particularly sailing or windsurfing.

Intermediate Day Cruising

This course provides practical experience of piloting and passage-planning by day on coastal waters, using both traditional and electronic techniques.  

Prerequisites:  You must hold the RYA Level 2 National Powerboat Certificate with coastal endorsement to participate in this course.  It is strongly recommended that candidates hold current First Aid and VHF/SRC Operator's certificates.  Knowledge to the level of Day Skipper theory is recommended.

Following completion of this course attendees should be able to plan and execute short coastal passages by day.

 Advanced Powerboat

This course is for leisure and professional boaters wanting to undertake more adventurous trips by day and night. 

Prerequisites:  Candidates should be competent to the standard of the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate with a thorough knowledge of the navigation and chartwork to the level of Coastal Skipper/RYA Yachtmaster Shorebased certificate. It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF operators certificate.

Following successful completion of this course attendees should be able to plan and execute coastal trips and return to a familiar port by night.

We offer powerboat taster sessions to groups of people wishing to experience the thrill of powerboating on the water. We can take groups of up to 5 people per boat, with fully qualified instructors, arrange your session at a location to suit you within the Solent area; including Cowes and other areas of the Isle of Wight.

Alternatively, if you are looking to get some more time at the controls after attending one of our powerboat courses, we are able to offer sessions on board our powered craft along with one of our instructors who has local knowledge and can help you improve your boat handling skills or help you practice manoeuvres or possibly anchoring.

Course Cancellations/Transfers

We retain the right to cancel a date and transfer your booking or offer you a refund if the weather is unsuitable to run the course on the basis of health and safety. As part of this decision we will be looking at wind, temperature and sea state. Where possible we will give you 24 hours’ notice when a clear and accurate weather forecast comes through.

On the rare occurrence of staff sickness we will endeavour to cover the staff shortage and continue to run the course. This would also be grounds for a refund or date transfer.

The bookee cancelling the booking

Over 7 days before the course: We are happy to offer a full refund or transfer your booking to another date upon request.

Over 48 hours before the course: We will give a 50% refund or a full refund upon the presentation of a current doctor’s note.

Less than 48 hours before the course: We are not able to offer a refund

Please note that the time period stated refers to start of the day, not the start of the course.  All refunds are limited to course fees only.  If you book local accommodation, you may choose to take out cancellation/holiday insurance.
