Jodie graduated in 2023 with a BA English Language and Linguistics degree and is now studying a practical speech and language therapy course.
My Southampton open day
The lecturers were incredibly welcoming on my open day and I immediately felt at ease. They showed a real passion for their subject, and it was evident that they cared about their students as well as their specialities.
It was this passion, along with a gorgeous campus and a sense of familiarity, that made Southampton a real no brainer.
The course was small and intimate, so my group were very close, and we helped each other every step of the way.
The Digital Humanities Hub holds many fond memories of sitting in the purple booths writing plans on the whiteboards as one large group. We were trying to read spectrograms for our sound and voice assessment - it was a great collaborative workspace.
My biggest memory of my degree was the support and guidance from our lecturers through each of our modules. As we were a small cohort, our lecturers became our number one supporter, and ‘held our hands’ through the full 3 years.
Developing skills
I developed a lot of personal skills at Southampton that continue to be beneficial in my working life and my current master’s. These include communication, teamwork, logic and reasoning, resilience and self-discipline.
The phonetic transcription, spectrogram reading and conversation analysis that I learnt on my degree are the basis for the speech and language therapy degree and career I’m pursuing.
I’m now supporting children and adults with speech and language communication needs. This hands-on experience is invaluable for applying the knowledge I’ve learnt and developing my practical skills as a future speech and language therapist.
