Dr Dorrie Chao is Departmental Head of Teaching in Strategy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Programme Leader of MSc Business Strategy and Innovation Management, and International Exchange/Erasmus Coordinator within Southampton Business School (SBS) at the University of Southampton.

Dorrie holds a PhD in Management and an MSc degree in Strategic Entrepreneurship with Distinction, both from the University of Southampton. Her PhD thesis focused on the contribution that the evolving academic entrepreneur/technology transfer manager relationship make to the absorptive capacity of university spin-out companies. Before pursuing her PhD, she worked as a research fellow at a research institution in Taiwan and was involved in various public funded projects including a study on the entrepreneurial environment of Taiwanese IT Start-ups.

Dorrie constantly adopts innovative approaches to encourage interaction with students during lectures to enhance their learning experience, including running innovation simulations and organising field trips. She also frequently invites guest speakers from the innovation and technology sectors to reinforce her teaching, especially on hot topics such as artificial intelligence and cloud technology, which the students have greatly appreciated. She acted as the ‘link tutor’ at the SBS from 2017 to 2020 with the aim of gathering the UG cohort together to build a group identity aligned with the School’s aims and aspirations and helping them to make the most of their time at the SBS. She has been nominated many times for the SUSU teaching award (in the 'Most Engaging Lecturer' category) and won the Vice Chancellor's Teaching Award in 2020.
