Arrival

Arriving at university is an exciting and busy time with a lot to take in. Our induction programme is designed to help you settle in as quickly as possible, with help or advice available whenever you need it. For most students, 'arrival' means getting to your halls of residence a week or so before the start of the teaching year.

Before you arrive

There are some things that you will need to do before you arrive; the University has produced a checklist to help you make your preparations. To find out what you need to do before you arrive, visit www.areyouready.southampton.ac.uk.

When you arrive

The checklist also highlights some actions to follow up when you arrive, during the induction week before the academic year begins (also known as Freshers’ Week). This includes welcome events and introductions from your department and the Students' Union, plus a variety of social activities. To help find your way around, it is worth investing in a Southampton (or Winchester if you will be attending Winchester School of Art) street map.

The following is an example timetable for first year UK students:

Arrival at Chemistry

Towards the end of Freshers Week the focus moves to our Chemistry-specific induction programme. This follows a set timetable in order to help you familiarise yourself with the department and proceed through registration smoothly ready to begin your teaching and learning programme the following week.

International students

Students coming to Southampton from outside the UK (including EU countries) should already have received a welcome pack from Chemistry's own International Support Team. There are additional events for you during the first two weeks, and ongoing support and advice from both Chemistry and the University through the year if you need it.

As well as the usual sources of advice and help, we run a unique student-led initiative which provides additional support for international students.

Once you have accepted a place, make sure that the International Support Team has your current email address. Check your email account regularly, and keep the Team informed about anything that might delay your arrival.
