The aim of this module is to develop your understanding of the specialism of paediatric audiology. This module includes problem-based learning, and will also provide you with learning opportunities in a range of generic skills relevant to clinical scientists.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Critically evaluate the scientific basis and clinical utility of paediatric hearing assessment methods taking into account child development and the aim of the assessment (e.g. screening, diagnosis or habilitation)
- Explain the epidemiology of childhood hearing loss, the effects of hearing loss on child development, the child and the family, the selection of appropriate hearing assessment methods and the importance of interdisciplinary working.
- Critically compare common approaches to the habilitation of children with hearing loss, including hearing-aid prescription and evaluation and other common and emerging forms of management
- Demonstrate mastery of effective self-directed learning and scientific communication
Syllabus
• The epidemiology of childhood hearing loss
• The principles and practice of newborn hearing screening programmes.
• Audiological and non-audiological investigations following the identification of hearing impairment
• Stages of child development and the appropriate objective and behavioural assessment methods at different stages
• The importance of timely hearing assessment and its link to speech and language development.
• Factors that contribute to the successful hearing assessment of a child, e.g. accuracy, sensitivity, reliability, the scientific evidence underlying paediatric assessment methods and interdisciplinary working.
• Planning and implementation of audiological assessment strategies taking into account the needs of the individual patient (including management of glue ear and knowing when to refer for potential cochlear implantation).
• Principles of selection, prescription, verification, evaluation and monitoring of amplification for children including the role of carers and other professional in the process.
Learning and Teaching
Teaching and learning methods
• Lectures or tutorials in classroom environment (blended learning). The module will use flip-learning approaches for some topics, where students will be asked to review pre-recorded lectures and work on tasks ahead of a tutorial
• Lectures will be delivered by a range of different health professionals linked to audiology and reflective session will be included on the importance of interprofessional learning.
• Small-group practicals related to practical techniques
• Formative tasks incude a fictional paediatric case study, a critical analysis task on the evidence based related to paediatric testing and a reflective session on the importance of interprofessional learning.
