Module overview
The Research as Applied to Medicine (RAM) module will enable you to understand the types of research activities involved in Medicine. You will learn skills to access and use resources critically in researching a specific subject and to develop data analysis and visualisation skills, which are essential in understanding and communicating health-related data. It will also enable you to understand the principles of patient and public involvement in medical research and engage in research activities.

- Demonstrate data analysis, interpretation and visualisation skills

- Demonstrate development of effective communication using oral, writing and computing skills
- Describe and exemplify the principles of patient and public involvement in medical research
Syllabus
In order to meet the learning outcomes, the Research as Applied to Medicine module syllabus will contain teaching in the following areas:
• Different types of research evidence and hypothesis testing
• Quantitative and qualitative research methods
• The role of patient and public involvement in medicine
• Effective literature searching
• Literature citations methods
• How to present research findings to a group
• Practical elements of data analysis and presentation (numeracy and data visualisation)
• Basic statistical methods in research
• Relevant research that informs understanding of disease and clinical practice

Assessment
Assessment strategy
There is no compensation between the Assignment and Attendance and Engagement components. Failure in one of these components leads to a referral opportunity in that component only; failure in both components leads to a referral opportunity in both components Taught content of the RAM module can also be assessed in the MCQ and/or written component of the Year 0 assessments. Students will keep a portfolio of research activities for the duration of their BM programme.Formative
