MEDI6244 Work Based Learning: Task

Module Overview

During the module you will develop a professional portfolio where you will have the opportunity to translate your knowledge gained through your studies into your practice by undertaking a work-based task. As a student, you have a significant amount of theoretical knowledge and, by seeing allergy healthcare provision through approved diagnosis and management schemes in practice, you will be able to identify novel areas to explore in your own workplace. This module is designed to offer you a unique and flexible approach to learning. It will provide you with opportunities for personal and professional development according to your individual learning needs. The module will allow you to gain academic credit for the knowledge and skills, further developed through your studies, that you will put into practice in your professional/working lives.

  • Plan and implement clinical case discussions in the form of a virtual patient, at a professional level, acting autonomously.

  • Propose a clear rationale for the extensive examination of a topic or issue related to your area of practice.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Critically appraise and synthesise an extensive range of evidence pertinent to the topic you wish to explore.
  • Reflect on your professional practice in light of your experience during this module.

Syllabus

Online supportive material accessed electronically through the MSc Allergy website and facilitated on-line will be provided to identify: • The module philosophy and purpose • Library and IT induction where required • The construction of a learning contract • Assessment advice and choice • Agree the time scale and future support

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

Learning and teaching methods include e-learning resources, self-directed learning and one-to-one tutorial support from the module leaders, available in person or via telephone, e-mail or skype. Group support will be available via online tutorials. Students are encouraged to raise aspects from the module that they would like to be covered in these sessions, which are recorded and made available on Blackboard for those unable to attend.

Assessment

Assessment Strategy

The assessment for the module provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes. There will be two assessed components, i) Task, ii) Evaluation and Report. The pass mark for the module and all assessed components is 50%.

Costs associated with this module

Students are responsible for meeting the cost of essential textbooks, and of producing such essays, assignments, laboratory reports and dissertations as are required to fulfil the academic requirements for each programme of study.

Computer: It is advisable that students provide their own laptop or personal computer, although shared facilities are available across the University campus.

Webcams: It is advisable that students provide their own webcam and microphone (integrated or USB/standalone) to take full advantage of the online support offered during the module.
