Introduction to Aircraft Design
This is an aerospace design synthesis module. The aircraft operations, aerodynamics, mechanics of flight, mechanics of solids and propulsion modules of Part I and II having equipped the students with the building blocks of aerospace engineering science, this module places them into the context of aircraft design in the ‘real world’, as represented by regulatory, performance and cost constraints. The module takes an applied, computational approach, introducing the students to key concepts through hands-on examples. -

Introduction to Astronomy and Space Science
The module shows how simple physical principles can be used to learn about the Universe. The focus is upon how one can measure physical quantities such as size, distance, temperature, age and mass for the variety of objects in the Universe. By its end students should be able to appreciate topics of current interest in astronomy and cosmology.
Students should be aware that this module requires A-level physics (with a C grade or above) and A-level maths (grade C or above). -

Introduction to Biological Oceanography
Introduction to general aspects of biological oceanography from phytoplankton to fish. The module is designed for students with no previous experience of studying biological systems. The module follows the flow of energy from light, via primary producers and then through the food chain in a number of typical oceanic systems - from coastal to open-ocean. Students will learn the importance of microbial processes and their role in the cycling of carbon, energy and thus in the regulation on global climate. Students will also be introduced to the range of methods used to measure and interrogate the biological components of ocean systems. Students will learn via a series of lectures and guided background reading. Students will gain practical experience through the sampling and data analysis of components of estuarine marine systems; this data will be used as the basis of a short report describing biological processes. -

Introduction to Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering is an exciting and multidisciplinary field that combines expertise in a wide range of engineering techniques, anatomy and physiology, medicine, healthcare and the personal and societal context in which patients and their carers live, and in which health-services and the healthcare industry operates. This module aims to provide an overview of technologies, and provide an awareness of the diverse challenges that form the background to research, development and use of Healthcare Technologies. -
BIOM1001 2025-26
Introduction to Biomedical Engineering
This module will introduce students to the disciplines of biomedical engineering (BME). This module is organized into 4 blocks.
The first block provides an overview of the key challenges in health and wellness, discussing ethical and security considerations as part of an overall theme of Responsible Research and Innovation.
Students will also study 3 further blocks that will provide a foundation in the key disciplines of chemistry, physics and biology as required for biomedical engineering.
All blocks are compulsory. -
