In last few decades there has been substantial growth in interest and research in the management of higher education institutions. Whilst this research has provided a useful insight into the operation of universities, the focus of most of these studies has been at an organisational level, where the researchers examined how universities have adapted to the changing social and political conditions, or to changes in the structure and leadership of the university. An area that is less developed is how these changes operate at an individual level. This project focuses on this aspect and explores the effect of the changes on academic staff and in particular academics in research-intensive universities.
