Research project: World Class Maths

Currently Active:

This project included the design and presentation of two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) from October 2017 with publisher MacMillan on the Futurelearn platform (the platform might change in the future).

World class maths

Dates: May 2018 - now

One course is called ‘World Class Maths: Asian Teaching Methods’ and in the course learners learn about the global success of primary maths teaching methods in Asia. Topics that are included are an introduction into Asian mathematics achievement in the international TIMSS test, the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach, Bar Modelling and Variation Theory. In a second course called ‘World Class Maths: Asian Teaching Practice’ more concrete tasks from a primary mathematics textbook are used to develop understanding of these methods further. Together, these courses have run more than a dozen times and more than 20,000 learners have participated since the first launch in May 2018. Those that responded were very positive about the courses and many reported the courses have impacted their practices.
